Voedselkringloop

Picture

De Voedselkringloop is a project of De KasKantine which aims to reduce food waste. We focus on saving primarily fruits, vegetables, bread and dry products.

The project is 100% run by volunteers. Our food savers pick up food that otherwise would have been thrown away, sort it out and present it in our ‘shops’ which are open to anyone who is interested.

Food Distribution

We currently distribute food in collaboration with Huis van de Wijk Het Anker located at Jacques Veltmanstraat 427 in Amsterdam. This location is outdoors. Please be observe 1,5m social distancing and follow our volunteers' safety directives.
Opening hours: Every Thursday from 13.00 until the food is finished and every Friday from 12.00.

Kaskantine's approach to food waste

Picture
The broader aim of the project is to contribute to the circular economy of the neighborhood, and to make citizens “future proof” by closing resource loops. In the EU, around 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euro's (FUSIONS, 2016), about 30% of the originally produced food.
Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. Reducing food waste helps to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and, on top of that, it enables us to:
  • support the fight against climate change (food waste alone generates about 8% of global greenhouse gas missions)
  • save nutritious food for redistribution to those in need, helping to eradicate hunger and malnutrition (some 43 million people in the EU cannot afford a quality meal every second day)
  • save money for farmers, companies and households.

Become a partner by donating your surplus food!

We believe part of the solution to food waste is small scale, local and community-based redistribution, therefore we are currently looking to partner up with more local businesses in the neighborhood. When it comes to fresh produce and small amounts of food, large scale logistics simply don’t work as efficiently as the local approach. By donating food to De Voedselkringloop, small businesses can improve the environment by saving food which would otherwise be wasted, while reducing transport emissions because it is brought to a local distributor.
So, if your local business is interested in donating surplus food, we can get you started by addressing one basic question:

What is considered food that can be donated (food surplus)?
  • perishable and non-perishable food that is near or past its THT date
  • incorrectly weighed or measured food products that can no longer be sold,
  • incorrectly labeled food, damaged or imperfect food products of which the safety is not compromised
  • oversupplied food items and out dated promotional or seasonal items,
  • food that does not comply with aesthetic norms but that still complies with health regulations AND does not need cooling
are all possibly fit for donation!
Food that we can NOT process
  • food with TGT date
  • products that need cooling
  • quantities beyond our capacity (more than 20 crates)
We donot accept food from private households

Volunteering
We are looking for responsible teammates who intend to be involved in the project for a longer period of time. Without our volunteers the project would just be another great but vain idea. Would you like to get locally active to try to reduce food waste? Would you like to learn more about how to avoid food waste? The more volunteers, the more food we can actually save! Please use the contact form below if you want to get involved. More information about volunteering....

A shipping container made as a food distribution place

The Kaskantine was always active in fighting food waste. The Voedselkringloop has been established in 2018 to expand the distribution to the neighbourhood. Do you want to read more about our starting period? Read this article in Het Parool, or this one in De Westkrant!
To begin with, our volunteers refurbished a 20 ft shipping container, additionally equipping it with an insulating green roof. In 2019 we started a second redistrition point at Huis van de Wijk Het Anker. In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, we decided to distribute only to Het Anker.
