Workshop Vegetable Fermentation

Picture
Curious about fermentation but not sure where to start? This hands-on workshop is for anyone wanting to get started with vegetable fermentation. Fermentation is one of the oldest and simplest ways to preserve food.
It gives vegetables a tangy taste and helps you avoid food waste. We cover how fermentation works, which vegetables ferment well and which don't, and how to tell safe fermentation from spoilage.
You'll learn what to expect as your ferment develops at home over 1-4 weeks. You'll make your own jar of fermented vegetables to take home and taste different ferments during the workshop.
2 hours • No experience needed

A starting point for anyone who wants to grow vegetables but isn't sure where to begin. We cover how to choose crops for your space, plan for sunlight and watering, and figure out seasonal timing. This includes what to plant when, whether to direct-seed or pre-seed, and how to work with the season you're in.
We'll cover planting in the ground as well as in containers.
You'll take home a small container with seeds you planted and 3 seedlings ready to grow.

Herb gardening is a simple way to save money, reduce plastic waste, and enjoy fresh flavors.
This workshop covers growing common kitchen herbs (perennial vs. annual, woody vs. soft, their different needs) and how to cook and preserve the harvest . We show you how to transplant supermarket herbs successfully, how to start herbs from seed, proper harvesting and pruning techniques, and multiple preservation methods (drying, freezing, sauces, storing in oil). We will taste what we made during the workshop.

Managing your Vegetable Garden

Picture
For gardeners who need help with ongoing care
Gardens need regular attention to thrive. This workshop gives you a system for maintaining your garden through the season that you can use every year, even when life gets busy.
You'll learn when to fertilize, how to manage pests organically, how to recognize problems early, and essential maintenance tasks like pruning and succession planting. The focus is on prevention first, then knowing when and how to intervene. You will leave with a systematic plan for managing your garden, no matter the size.

Workshop: 4 Methods of Composting

Picture
For urban gardeners exploring composting options
Growing vegetables requires good compost. But in the city, making compost in small spaces is challenging. There are different methods, and they all depend on scale, available space, and environment.
This workshop compares four different methods: bokashi, hot composting, cold composting, and vermicomposting. We cover the basics of how composting works, then explore each method in detail. You'll see each system in action, turn a hot compost pile, and learn when to use which method based on your space and situation.

Workshop: Hot Composting

Picture
For community gardens and human-scale composting
Learn the fast composting method for managing food waste and garden materials at scale. This workshop is for people running community gardens, composting projects, or larger-scale home composting.
You'll build a hot compost pile together, learning the layering system, understanding the C:N ratio, and recognizing when it's working. The focus is hands-on: chopping materials, constructing bays, layering greens and browns. We also cover site management, processing systems, turning schedules, and keeping the routine manageable.
3 hours • For people with composting projects or sites • Available on request

Workshop: Emergency Preparedness

Picture
Life can be unpredictable: storms, power cuts, empty shelves at the store. This workshop helps you prepare practically, without fear or overwhelm.
Learn a simple planning system for water, cooking, lighting, and communication. Map what you already have at home and identify gaps. Practice adapting to different scenarios with confidence.
In small groups, you'll cook plant-based recipes that work for everyday dinners and adapt to emergencies. We cover food storage planning and cooking methods when the grid is out. At the end, we eat together what we've cooked.
You'll leave with a personalized emergency plan and practical skills you can use immediately.
