Kaskantine

Learning Community

What can you do at Kaskantine ?

Our programs and activities empower fellow city dwellers and communities to address climate change and find joy in the process. We offer a range of opportunities for hands-on learning in areas like urban gardening, composting, plant-based cooking, saving and redistributing food waste, building off-grid structures, and producing renewable energy. We create meaningfull connections in our neighborhood!

About Us

As an off-grid organization, we utilize plots of land that are temporarily available. Over the years, we've occupied four different locations, and currently, we're based in Amsterdam-Slotervaart. Here, we've transformed eleven shipping containers and two greenhouses into a hub for meeting, growing, eating, and collaborating. See here for our journey through 4 different locations during the last ten years. Being off-grid allows us to access land in the city that is either temporarily available and has low market value.

Opening Times &  Events

Picture
Since the Kaskantine is off-grid, our activities predominantly occur during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Instead of regular opening hours, we host events listed on our event site. Below is an overview of our activities throughout the year. To view current events, please refer to the Event Calendar.

There are no events during the winter months as the greenhouse cannot be heated.

Throughout the Year

Some of the activies are throughout the whole year like our compost club and food rescue market.

Bokashi Compost Club

Picture
Members receive a special airtight container, a Bokashi bin, for storing their food scraps at home. This allows to collect and separate waste without worrying about decomposition or rot.

When the bin is full, or when you want to empty it, you can bring it to our compost house which is accessible 24/7, and swap it with a clean bin. There's no fuss or mess, just a continuous cycle of waste conversion.

Join our initiative to prevent food scraps from being incinerated, contribute to climate solutions, and maintain a fresh, clean kitchen by becoming a member.

The Food Rescue Market (De Voedselkringloop)

Picture
The Food Rescue Market (De Voedselkringloop) runs each Friday. Focusing on rescuing fruits, veggies, bread, and dry goods, our Food Savers collect surplus from partners.

Sorted and distributed at our open-to-all market, it operates from 18:00 until food runs out.

We use a lottery system for distribution. Please note, we can't predict food quantity or attendees. Check this link every Friday to see what's available or any special announcements.

Workshops

Picture
Discover our workshops on urban gardening, food preservation, and composting. Designed to address the challenges of limited urban space, our sessions teach you how to grow vegetables and herbs in small spaces, preserve seasonal harvests, and transform waste into valuable compost. Tailored to the season, our workshops highlight what can be planted, preserved, and composted year-round.
Each season, we host workshops on gardening, food preservation, and composting, with additional on-demand sessions available based on interest.
