About Us 

The Kaskantine is an off-grid educational garden and greenhouse. Being off-grid allows us to access land in the city that is temporarily available and has low market value. Over the years, we've occupied four different locations, and currently, we're based in Amsterdam-Slotervaart. Here, we've transformed eleven shipping containers and two greenhouses into a hub for meeting, growing, eating, and collaborating. What Can you do?

Our programs and activities empower fellow city dwellers and communities to address climate change and find joy in the process. We offer a range of opportunities for hands-on learning in areas like urban gardening, composting, fermentation, plant-based cooking, saving and redistributing food waste, building off-grid structures, and producing renewable energy. We like to create meaningfull connections in our neighborhood! 

Upcoming Workshops  & Events Spring 2026

Urban Gardening Workshops

Vegetable gardening workshops according to the season. Learn how to start a garden and maintain the garden. Workshops start in Spring 2026.

Fermentation Workshops

Hands-on fermentation for beginners. Turning vegetables like cabbage, carrots, and radishes into preserved food that lasts months. You'll make a jar to take home.

Composting  Workshops

Composting techniques for gardeners in small spaces or in bigger gardens. Learn the skill of transforming garden trimmings and food scraps into compost.

Vegan Brunch 

Each season we offer a vegan buffet brunch on a Sunday to enjoy the start of a season and seasonal vegan dishes with all-time favorites from sweet to savory.

Clothes swap and repair

Join a Sunday of clothes swap and clothes repair in the greenhouse. A great opportunity to swap clothes, get something new to you, or join others at the repair table.

Course 2026 

Gardening Course Amsterdam

Our next courses will begin in March 2026, with a second round in May 2026.
This is a 5-week course for beginners, where participants learn the
essential skills to set up their own container garden at home.
Learn how to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers on your balcony, patio, or anywhere you can’t plant directly in the ground.

Bokashi Club

Neighborhood Composting
Food scraps don't need to get burned with the rest of the trash. If you've got space for a bucket in your kitchen, you can become a member. You get a Bokashi bin to separate scraps at home. When it's full, swap it at our drop-off house and we'll compost it for you. Airtight bins mean no smell or flies. 24/7 drop-off access.

Garden Seed Exchange

Do you have too many seeds? Half-used packets? Too many seeds for the space you have? Or maybe even some seeds you have saved from last year's crop? Would you like to share them?
​You can drop them off in our seed exchange house in either a closed envelope or the original seed packaging.

Take a Book - Leave a Book!

Would you like to give your books a second life?
​Our upcycled fridges are now a free book giveaway. You can bring books you don't want anymore or take books home with you.
