OUR STORY

Kaskantine 4.0 is a not-for profit cooperative run by Menno Houtstra and Betty Gebhard and a host of volunteers from all walks of life. Together we are building and sustaining this grand experiment in urban self-sufficiency and sustainable living.

Read on to learn about the evolution of Kaskantine, from our early beginnings in a former sugar factory to our most recent activities at our fourth location on a transformed football field.

Kaskantine 4.0: September 2019 to Now 

In 2019, the Kaskantine moved to its fourth and current location, still in the Delflandpleinbuurt, where we have been negotiating for a longer rental contract with the municipality. It is an old football field, in an area that will be transformed into a new neighbourhood after 2025. 

As building began here, the Kaskantine re-opened the Voedselkringloop, a place where food surplus from different shops and businesses are gathered and redistributed. We also started a vegetable garden, and are preparing a Greening the Neighbourhood plan, as well as a bike repair workshop where people can learn how to fix their bikes.

Kaskantine 3.0: 2018-2019 Vlaardingenlaan - Bouwplaats Project Lieven

In 2017, the Kaskantine was invited to build a new place on a construction site opposite the Delflandplein in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The cooperative grew again with several members and new containers. A large garden was also added to the formation.

Kaskantine 2.0: 2016-2017 Haarlemmerweg - Parkeerplaats ING gebouwen

After three years of KK 1.0, our user agreement ended, and we got an offer to build a new Kaskantine on the parking lot of an old bank on the Haarlemmerweg in Amsterdam. Several new initiatives joined, and a cooperative was established. Four shipping containers and a greenhouse were added to the building. We built a professional kitchen, food storage, and toilets all inside the shipping containers.

Kaskantine 1.0: 2014-2016 Halfweg - Sugar City

The Kaskantine started in 2013 in one of the ruins of the old sugar factory in Halfweg, when two chefs, who met each other while working in an organic restaurant in France, decided to realise their dream of making affordable meals with local and self-produced ingredients. We acquired a greenhouse and an old shipping container, and built a straw-bale house in the old building. Our cooking style gathered a lot of attention, especially from folks in Amsterdam.
