Herb Spiral

Picture
The herbal spiral is a planter made out of stones or bricks laid out in a form of a spiral. The shape allows the bed and stones to be heated by the sun during the day and retain heat in the soil throughout the night in a way that is more effective than a ground level bed. The spiral shape makes a pyramid with a larger surface that faces towards the south, making the planter even warmer. This makes this system suitable for aromatic herbs many of which grow naturally in southern Europe, like thyme, rosemary, marjoram, tarragon, melissa, hyssop, curry plant and lavender. On the cooler "north slope"of the spiral, more moderate climate herbs can be grown, such as chives and mint.
