A Doughnut Economy for Nieuw-West?

A Doughnut Economy in Nieuw-West?

The Kaskantine is establishing a Doughnut Fund in Slotervaart, that support local organisations, using the #DoughnutEconomy approach of #KateRaworth.
Together with the neighbourhood platform we made a "Neighbourhood Doughnut",  that identifies and measures local values like green clean streets and public safety.

Impacting local values is measured by questionnaire supplied by MAEX.nl, the social "AEX" index. Kaskantine is helkping local organisations to use this tool. It calculates a certain financial value of the social impact. Until now 20 local organisations joined the project donutbakkerij.nl/fondsfonds

How the Kaskantine is contributing to the SDG's

The SDG's are global goals, mainly meant for emerging countries in the global south for their sustainable development. But they also have relevance for relatively poor neighbourhoods in the cities of the Global North, like Slotervaart. Nature and environment are under a lot of stress. How can we at the same time experience more welfare and regenerate our environment? The Kaskantine shows that the key is to make the regeneration of nature and the environment the source for a larger welfare, also called the "welbeing economy"  or the "Doughnut Economy": like creating green jobs, and turning lawns into gardens and mini nature reserves..

Amsterdam Nieuw-West is one of the three relatively poor parts of the town, with dominant social housing, the largest unemployment and criminality. The city launched a development program of 20 years to create more opportunities for the youth. The Kaskantine took the lead in a coalition of neighboorhood organisations to make them part of this program, and steer the support through a "Doughnut Fund".
