Open Positions

Team Food   Rescue

Do you hate food waste? Would you like to become part of the Food Rescue Team? One of our goals at the Kaskantine is to save as much food as possible from becoming food waste. Our volunteers are essential for making that happen!

Why This Matters:
  • According to Project Drawdown, “Roughly one-third of the world’s food production is never eaten. By reducing loss and waste, we can reduce the need for land and resources used to produce food as well as the greenhouse gases released in the process. After taking into account the adoption of the Plant-Rich Diet solution, the reduction of food waste can avoid 88.50–102.20 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 2050.”

Food Rescue Cyclist

Picture
Commitment: Fridays, every 2 weeks, 09:00–12:00

Setting: Work alongside one other volunteer.
Do you love biking and want to make a difference? As a Food Rescue Cyclist, you’ll use an electric cargo bike or a regular bike to collect surplus fruits and vegetables from local shops and businesses. Working in a team of two, you’ll meet your partner at the start of your shift, ride together to the suppliers, sort and load the food onto the cargo bike, and then return together. It’s a rewarding and enjoyable role for those passionate about cycling and teamwork. One volunteer rides the electric bike with the goods, while the other uses a regular bike (with no transport). This role is all about collaboration, making it a fantastic experience for those who love being active and working in pairs.

Responsibilities
  • Collect surplus food from local shops and businesses.
  • Work with your partner to safely sort, load, and transport food.

Qualifications
  • Reliable, responsible, and patient.
  • Comfortable operating a bike and transporting goods.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Punctual and committed to a regular schedule.

Is this activity right for you?
This position is ideal for individuals who:
  • Love biking in all weather conditions.
  • Enjoy starting their day early and are free on Friday mornings.
  • Appreciate a mix of physical activity and social interaction.
  • Live near the initiative or have errands in the neighborhood after the shift.
  • Are flexible with timing, as shifts can sometimes run longer when there’s more food to sort or delays at the suppliers.
It’s important that this role feels like a positive and stress-free commitment. We’re seeking volunteers who are dependable and enthusiastic about joining for the long term. If your schedule is uncertain or likely to change in the coming months, this may not be the right position for you.

Food Rescue Market Volunteer

Picture
Commitment: Fridays, every 2 weeks, 17:00–19:00

Setting: Outdoors, working in a team.
Help us distribute rescued food at our market! This role is perfect for sociable individuals who enjoy interacting with people and fostering a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll work as part of a team to set up a vibrant market stand showcasing food collected by our Food Rescue Pick-Up Teams. Together, you’ll organize the produce, label crates with portions, and prepare the space to welcome visitors.
During the market, you’ll assist behind the stall, helping visitors pick out what they need and explaining portion limits. Afterward, the team will tidy up, pack away tables, and compost or process any leftover food. It’s like running a farmer’s market stall—with a mission to reduce food waste!
This role is a fantastic fit for those who enjoy teamwork, chatting with others, and contributing to a meaningful cause.

Responsibilities:
  • Set up and organize the market stand.
  • Sort vegetables and assist behind the table.
  • Communicate with visitors, answering questions, and providing a friendly experience.
  • Compost leftovers and clean up after the market.
Qualifications:
  • Reliable, responsible, and patient.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Enjoys working in a team and connecting with people.
  • Punctual and committed to the role.

Is this activity right for you?
This role suits individuals who enjoy socializing, working in a team, and creating a positive atmosphere. It’s important to be on time and stress-free about your commitment, as the team relies on each other to ensure a smooth operation.
If your schedule is unpredictable or you’re unsure about your availability in the coming months, this might not be the best fit.

How often do I need to volunteer?
We ask for a commitment of 1-2 sessions per month, each lasting about 2 hours. This helps ensure consistency and smooth operations for the team and the community.
Can I volunteer occasionally or whenever I’m free?
We work with a structured schedule to ensure everyone knows their responsibilities in advance. This helps us organize effectively and create a reliable experience for everyone involved.
What happens if I can’t make my scheduled shift?
Life happens! If you need to miss a shift, please let us know as soon as possible so we can adjust. However, consistent participation is key to keeping our initiatives running smoothly.
Do I need prior experience to volunteer?
Not at all! Most roles don’t require prior experience—just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and contribute your time and effort.

Is there any training or support provided?
Yes! During the Information Day, we’ll explain everything you need to know.
What can I learn as a volunteer?
In the Food Waste team, you’ll gain knowledge about food safety, food rescue techniques, and how to organize sustainable initiatives. In all roles, you’ll also enhance your social skills, collaborate with others, and work on climate solutions outside of consumerism. Your experience will vary depending on the team and the people you work with, but one thing is certain: you’ll learn valuable skills while making a real difference!
Can I try out a team to see if I like it?
Yes! After the Info Day, if you’re interested in a specific team and it seems like a good fit, you can try out a shift. Afterward, you can decide if you want to commit to the role or if it’s the right fit for you.
I travel a lot. Is that okay if I can’t make it regularly?
Unfortunately, our positions require a consistent commitment, as we rely on routine and regular participation to keep things running smoothly. If your schedule allows for more stability, we'd love to have you on board!
